This is good advice! I have always done this for some reason – maybe partly an inclination to vet my thoughts about something….I also had a teacher who once said if you ever find a poem you absolutely love, type it out, or hand write it out. It is also amazing the things you can learn about how the poem is working by doing that action. I liken it to painting a Cezanne: if you do what he did, you may learn how he did what he did.

It’s so true — thinking things out creates a product, but writing things out creates a different product, a qualitatively superior one, imo.
